Yesterday we went down to Cape to pick up something for the grandtwins that a lady had been holding for the Glue. After taking an unintentional tour of a large portion of Cape's residential area we managed to pick up the stuff. We decided to blow a little time at Academy Sports to avoid the noon rush hour then head to the Pilot House for something to eat. We'd heard really good things about it and had tried to go there once but it had been packed. We browsed some at Academy and picked up a couple kinds of Shed BBQ sauce and a container of their rub which are all good. After missing a turn we finally pulled into the Pilot House parking lot a little after 1pm. The lot was still packed but we found one spot close to a culvert that we could park in. As we walked in a couple cars pulled out but once we got in the building it was still crowded. We found a table for two which normally seem too small but this one seemed to have more room. Lisa ordered a Blue Moon and I had a Stag while we looked at the menu. Lisa decided on the giant kabobs and I went with a cheeseburger. While we were waiting a couple people from Murphysboro walked in. On my way to the bathroom I said hi to them and discovered they were talking to a guy who was the class ahead of me and we'd worked together a long time ago. I'd walked right past him and we didn't see each other. The food came very fast for how crowded it was and the first thing I noticed was how big the portions were. The cheeseburger rivals Jacks and Hickory Ridge as my favorite around here. The beef tenderloin kabobs were very good with a surprising amount of tenderloin on them. I'm pretty sure we could have split either order and been fine. The Pilot House is definitely on our short list of eating places in Cape and will be back soon to try the BBQ and the catfish.
After there we went to our go to place Katy O'ferrals for a pint of their house red ale which is a favorite of mine. It seems like there is always someone there who we have a great time talking to and this was no exception. We then decided to go to the Coin-Op Cantina which our nephew really likes. We ordered a couple salted carmel pecan ale from 4204 Mainstreet in Belleville. The beer was good but probably too sweet to drink more than one of and really more than 1/2 a pint. The Cantina itself was ok but nothing special. They had a variety of video games and pinball machines but all too new and flashy for me. There was one skiball game too. We then stopped in The Bar for a couple Blue Moons before heading home. Nice trip and I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed the Pilot House.
