Yesterday we went made another trip to Cape. We almost went to Texas Roadhouse but decided on Bella Italia instead. I went down thinking pasta but we ended up getting a bella special pizza. The Glue also ordered a cup of Lobster Bisque.
They always bring a load of bread and dipping oil that is awesome. We probably should have ordered a loaf to bring home. The Glue said her Bisque was good but I didn't care for it when I tried it, just not my thing. The pizza was really good. I'm not a big fan of onions on pizza but it worked really well on this one. We got a small pizza and it was a good thing. It was loaded with toppings and very filling (plus eating a lot of the bread). We stopped in 21 Tapps but they didn't have anything that interested us so we went on down to Minglewood. I got a kolsch again but the Glue opted for Civil Life brown ale. The kolsch was once again good and the Glue seemed to like hers. We went up the hill to Katy O'ferrels to get our must have house Irish red. Very good beer. While we were there one of our daughters classmates posted on Lisa's check in that the mojitos were real good there so she ordered one of those while I had a second Irish red. The Glue really liked the mojito and she said she'll probably get those instead of beer in the future. On the way home I decided to check out Snake Road and some of the bluffs. It was really nice to be able to see further into the swampy areas with all the vegetation gone. It was a really nice way to spend national curmudgeon day.

Sadly we'd never been to One Hot Cookie but yesterday we decided to rectify that problem. A big part of why is that they had chicken and dumplings and I was wanting something substantial.
We both ordered the chicken and dumps dinner with mashed potatoes. I ordered carrots and the Glue ordered green beans. Both orders also came with slaw and cookies which we didn't realize. We also ordered a pint of chicken and dumps in case the portions weren't very big. When we got there I was refused service by the worker at the window because I was a Packer fan. This happens more than you would think and I've had a running battle with him for years whenever we run into each other. When we got back home I was disappointed that I got green beans instead of carrots. Very few places do very good green beans and this was no exception, very disappointing. The chicken and dumps were another story, they were very good. They were thicker than the Glue likes but that's right up my alley. The mashed potatoes were real good and the slaw was excellent. They weren't the best oatmeal raisin cookies I've had but they were good. Oh and we never had to open the extra pint of chicken and dumps, the dinners were plenty. Sorry it took us so long and we'll be back sooner rather than later. I've been on a cajun kick so on Friday we decided to go on a quick trip to Broussards. We met old friend Big Gay Apryl and her new friend Gary there. We ordered alligator etouffee with fried crawfish. The waiter suggest a half and half which is the same portions but also includes a salad. They ordered the same except they got shrimp etouffee and fried alligator. Broussards has a very nice salad and their house dressing is very good and it's big enough for us to split. The food got there and I realized they'd mixed up the order but everyone had already started so we kept the shrimp etouffee and alligator.
The shrimp etouffee is good but we both really prefer alligator or crawfish. The fried alligator was real good and Apryl and Gary seemed to really like it too. My Southern Pecan was good and cold and the Glue didn't complain about her Amberbock. We decided to walk up the hill in the snow to Katy O'ferrels. I'd decided we'd only have one beer because I didn't want to drive home in the snow after dark. Their house Irish Red is really good and we were having a great time so we had two. We decided to stop at Minglewood on the walk back to our cars. They actually had beers we like this time. The Glue ordered a Hefe and I ordered a Kolsch. I ended up really liking the Kolsch and hope they keep it around. I drew the line at one beer even though the Glue and Apryl were pushing hard for a second. I told the Glue she could have one but I was leaving. Apparently when I went to the bathroom the Glue tried to order another and the bartender wouldn't give her one, Thanks bartender. By this time is was dark and snow was coming down but not sticking so it was time to head home. Good thing I hadn't had too many since a deer ran out in front of us between Grand Tower and Gorham. The Glue's new glasses came in on Tuesday so after the twin terrors went home we went to Marion to pick them up. After much deliberation we decided on picking up from Cummares.
We got the spaghetti and the Glue wanted extra sauce. It was very good as always and is big enough for us to share and have enough left for a meal for the twins. We got house dressing for out salad and the Glue thought it was different but it tasted the same to me. On Wednesday we dropped the twins off at school and went to Gresa's in DeSoto for breakfast. I've been wanting to go there for a while but no beer means no go for the Glue. We both ordered half order of B&G with two eggs. I got sausage patties and my eggs over medium. The Glue got bacon and her eggs over easy. The B&G was good and so was the sausage but the eggs were closer to over easy. It's not a big deal, I like both. The Glue's bacon was good but one of her eggs had some running white in it. Good place that I'm sure we'll go to again, just wish they were open a little longer in the afternoon. With my back feeling better it was time to go somewhere to eat. It's still not 100% so I wanted to keep it fairly close and to go there and come back without any other stops.
While we were deciding what to get the Glue ordered a Kaskaskia Copper and I got a wee heavy. I was thinking burger on the way up so I got a mushroom swiss burger. I subbed bacon fried brussel sprouts for fries/chips. The Glue got a candied blt with chips. My burger was good but nothing special. The brussel sprouts were very good. The Glues BLT was great and very big. The bacon was a lot more candied than we've had in the past. The chips were good but nothing special too, I went to the bar to get a growler of Kaskaskia Copper and started talking with a guy from Festus Mo. about places to go there. I hurt my back last week and hadn't done much in a few days to we decided to go to Bottoms Up partially just to get out of the house. I thought we were going to have to turn around but my back didn't really get worse so we kept going. The Glue ordered when we turned onto Route 3 but it took longer than that for the food.
I ordered catfish with double slaw while the Glue went with 1/2 chicken all white with double chips. We put the food in a pizza delivery bag from Sams so it would stay hot. My fish ended up mediocre. I'm guessing it would have been good if we'd have eaten there plus the chicken took a lot longer to cook so that didn't help either. The slaw was real good though. The Glues chicken was great and still hot. The chips weren't as hot but they were very good too. Moral of the story is fish doesn't stay good on pickup, next time order chicken instead. Earlier this week the Glue had an eye appointment at my cousins place in Marion. She'd had the same glasses for 10 years and it was time to get ones that weren't all scratched up. They cost more than I was expecting but oh well.
Afterwards we decided to get something to eat and cajun sounded good which is almost always true. Since we were in Marion we decided to go to Broussards in Paducah. There was a lot of holiday traffic on the way down so I was ready to relax. We stopped by Paducah Beer Werks but they weren't open so we headed on to Broussards. We got a table in the bar area and both of us ordered Sam Adams Winter Lager. It was tasty Tuesday and they were offering samples of three items. I asked about it and it was free, limited one per table. Why not? We got gumbo, creole and crawfish etouffee. The samples were bigger than expected but not enough by itself so we ordered some fried alligator and crawfish etouffee. We should have got alligator etouffee on the sample to change things up. The etouffee was great. The sample of gumbo was also very good but we were disappointed in the creole. It used to be a favorite but just didn't seem as good as we remembered. The bigger pieces of fried alligator were a little chewy but the smaller ones were very good. |
