We had to go to Paducah yesterday to pick up some carpet squares for our basement remodeling. We had to go to both Lowes there to get enough of it for the project.
After getting the tiles we went to Paducah Beer Werks for an appetizer and a beer but they were closed so we went to Broussards which is where Whalers Catch used to be. They've done a good job updating the interior and they have draft beer. The Glue ordered a Blue Moon and I went with an Adam's Beard from Dry Ground. I was nervous about ordering it but I ended up really enjoying it. We also ordered a Felix sampler platter which consists of fried alligator, fried crawfish and fried clam strips. It was $20 which is high for an appetizer but when it arrived it was humongous. There wasn't any way we could eat it all and it was great. After a stop at a beer store to pick up some beers that they don't have around here we stopped in Fat Ed's for a beer and an order of shrimp to eat when we got home. The Glue saw they had pretzels so we had that too and it too was big and very good. On the way home we decided to go to Karnak to visit a BBQ friend who we hadn't seen in several years. He now manages a sub shop there. We also made a quick stop at our nephews in Alto Pass. This morning we had to take both vehicles for oil changes and tire rotations. While they were doing that we walked to Cindy B's to have breakfast. We both got two eggs and biscuits and gravy instead of toast but I got sausage and she got bacon. We're on a great roll with the places we've been since they've all been great choices.

Fred had to miss last night so the Glue took his place.
In the first game we let several big scoring chances get away and only got one point when we should have got three or four. The game was back and forth with teams trading one or two points until it reached 7-7 and the Glue put an end to it by getting her first ball close and then ending it with her second. In the second game the Glue stayed hot and I heated up a little and we kept pouring it on before winning 9-3. I was skeptical about how much fun this season would be with all the restrictions but it's a lot better than I thought it would be. Of course we've played the early times the first two weeks which I prefer. Playing the same team back to back is good and bad. On the good side you finish the first game and start the second game right away, no more waiting around for your next game. On the other hand the second game seems kind of anti climactic. Mask are a pain but at least you can step back a few feet and take them off. The humidity makes them a lot worse. The fall extended season started for me on Wednesday as I took to the courts as a member of Holy Ballz. I'm not a fan of playing the same team twice each night but you have to go with the hand you were dealt.
In the first game we looked like a dynasty winning 9-3 in a game that was never close. In the second game they got out to a 5-1 lead but we came storming back and took a 6-5 lead. That's as far as the dynasty lasted as we didn't get a ball within 3 feet of the pallino and they put of four more points to win 9-6. They were only playing with three players and rotating which I don't like at all but understand with all that's going on right now. The big question is how many weeks will we play before getting shut down again. This past week we hauled a lot of stuff out of our basement and didn't feel like cooking at home so we went to T Street Pub in Christopher. I got a Montreal Ribeye and the Glue got a pasta dish. We both had salads with house dressing which were real good and we had almost a whole salad left over. I also got onion rings which were good but I'll probably go with something else next time. The Glues pasta was ok but nothing special. On the other hand my ribeye was outstanding, the best I've had in a restaurant in a long time.
Bocce starts this week and while Roll'em isn't playing I'll be playing with Holy Ballz and the Glue will be a sub if needed. Yesterday I saw that Broadway Grille in Sparta was having a ribeye and shrimp special which looked and sounded great. Of course if you can't make a picture of your food look good you are in trouble.
We split the ribeye and shrimp special and got a baked potato and baked beans to go with it. We also added fried alligator tail to our meal. I don't normally get steak out because I'm almost always disappointed but this one was great. Cooked a nice medium and with a nice seasoning on it. A baked potato is a baked potato and the beans were ok, not great not bad. The alligator tails were tasty but no where close to the ones at Blue Fish in Dongola. On the way back we stopped at Shiloh Hill Tavern for the first time. We've tried to go there a few other times but they've always been closed. It's a very old building that seems to have a lot of character to it. We weren't too far from leaving when a bunch of bocce players stopped in so we had another beer and had a good time but it was six o'clock by the time we left which is time for me to be home. After working around the house and mowing the yard we decided to go to DuQuoin and eat at S. Nicholaus brewery in part because a lot of places don't open until 4pm or are closed from 2-4pm.
My rueben was real good, one of the best around and the chips were solid. The Glue got the BLT and chips and her BLT was humongous and also one of the best I've ever had. I think it's what I'll get the next time we go there. Herbster and Clutch have indicated they don't want to risk playing in the extended summer/fall league which I can't fault anyone for being careful. I'm not sure how much interested I am in playing. The restrictions the Park District has put on the league make it very difficult to get excited about playing. I'm also not sure I want to go through the hassle of trying to get two more people who want to play so I'm not sure if Roll'em will play this year.
Yesterday we once again went to New Kahala but this time we weren't as pleased as in the past. I got Lo Mein which is one of my favorites at New China but New Kahala's version isn't one I really care for very much. The Glue got twice cooked beef which is normally one of our favorites there but this time she said it wasn't as good as in the past. Everyone has a bad day so we'll be back but it was disappointing. |
