Yesterday was my medicare birthday and the day got off to a less than stellar start when I showed up for my MRI and they told me the appointment was really at 7:30 instead of 7. They just want you there early to register. After waiting about a half hour I got to spend the next 30 minutes holding still in a torpedo tube. At least I got it after fighting with my insurance for a month and a half.
When I got home we decided to go somewhere instead of having something at the house. After considering several options we were down to Cardavino's, Broussards and Logan's when I thought of Katy O'ferrells. I hadn't slept well the night before so I wanted to be home in the afternoon so we got down there around noon. It didn't look like Katy O'ferrells was open but it was. When we walked in there were only a couple guys in the bar side and I noticed one of them had on what appeared to be a Packer shirt then the other guy said nice shirt to me. Always good to walk in a place and see Packer fans and have a conversation. We both started off with the house Irish red that is one of my favorite beers. I pretty much knew I was getting a ribeye and the Glue decided on one too. Both of us ordered a side salad, I got carrots and the Glue got chips. The steaks were tender but closer to medium well or well than they were to medium. We'd also requested cajun type seasoning but there wasn't any on there that we could taste. The steaks were supposed to be glazed with a Jamison type glaze but it was hit of miss where you could taste it. The side salads were nice but the house vinegarette was kind of bland, should have got french instead. The chips seasoning was also hit and miss with some tasting really good and others like there was no seasoning. The carrots were very very good and easily my favorite thing with the meal. Overall the meal was probably better than what I've written but not what I was hoping for. 🍺🍺🍷

We went to Kretzers yesterday with John & Lisa (aka Baby Daddy & Baby Mama). They'd never been there and seemed to be impressed there was a place like that in such a small town.
It was all you can eat crab legs for $59 and there at least 8 or 10 people having them. Not bad for 1pm on a Friday afternoon. When we went there before we didn't see the salad bar but it is the best I've seen in a long time. I'm not sure if it was smoked or roasted pork but it was on there along with a wide variety of toppings, pasta and soup. After quite a while trying to decide the girls both went with the salad bar while both the boys decided on the special of catfish nuggets. We both got onion rings instead of fries and also add a salad. The food came out quick and was ready just as we got back from the salad bar. Some people want their salad first and then the meal but it doesn't really matter to me. The catfish nuggets were excellent and there were a lot of them. The onion rings were handbreaded and also on point. The slaw was creamy style and it was good but nothing stood out. The one trip salad was $3 and good but it was way too much food for me. Baby Daddy was also very pleased with the catfish and onion rings. Neither girl cared for the bbq chili but seen other wised pleased. 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺 On the way back we stopped at the Blue Room. It was Baby Mama & Baby Daddys first time there too. It's not the same as before the fire, way brighter and just a different vibe. Yesterday the place was almost full and music was loud and we'd never seen it like that. We then stopped at the Fuzzy Duck for one before heading to the Twisted Vine. We we got there the place was closed and a for sale sign on it so add that to another place that has closed. We finished up the day with a couple at Brews Brothers and it was time for me go home. The Glue fixed cooked some really good meals this week and needed a break so we decided on a trip to Perryville to eat at Mary Janes Burger & Brews. It's always a nice ride up route 3 but I'm not a big fan of the Chester bridge into Missouri especially when the wind is blowing like it was yesterday but it ended up not too bad.
We both ordered Irish Red with honey, I think it was from Six Mile Bridge brewery. It was good but there are other Irish Reds I like better. My choice came down to The Big Kahuna or Here Comes The Boom. I went with the Big Kahuna which is a pork burger with pork belly, pepper jack cheese, korean bbq sauce and pickled jalapenos. I got the jalapenos on the side since I can't do hot anymore. The Glue went with the fish po' boy over the korean bbq skewers. Both came with unlimited seasoned fries but I opted for a side salad with house dressing instead figuring we would share the salad and fries. The salad was good but I prefer iceberg or romaine over the arugula/spring mix type. The house dressing was real good. The food came just as we were finishing the salad so it was great timing. Both sandwiches were pretty big. My pork burger was excellent. The pork burger worked great with the pork belly and the pepper jack added a little kick. I'm glad I got the jalapenos on the side. I tried one on the sandwich and it would have been too much for me. The Glue's fish po' boy looked burned but it was very crispy and really good but sloppy. The seasoned fries were okay but didn't really stand out. Overall a great experience. 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺 We left there and walked down to Jackson Street Brewery. They don't have a lot of beers that hit our tastes. We both had the chipotle pecan brown and it was surprisingly good. After that it was time to head back to the homestead. Yesterday we went over to Jack Russell Fish House in Benton. A big surprise awaited when we walked in, long time friend M who was also eating there.
I knew what I wanted when I walked in but it took the Glue a little bit to decide before she decided on wings and pepper jack soup. I got fried catfish with onion rings and slaw. My catfish was solid but the first piece was better than the second piece, of course that happens when you mistake a container of ranch for tartar sauce. The slaw was creamy and ok but nothing really jumped out about it. The onion rings were very good and easily the star of the meal. The Glue's soup was surprisingly good and she said very filling. Her wings had some kick and were very messy but good. The Glue said it best when she said everything was good but not really satisfying. 🍺🍺🍺 Recently Hicks BBQ in Belleville closed it's doors for good. Best ribs I've has in a restaurant and also great brisket chili. So sorry too see this for my old friend Alan.
This is another in disturbing trend of small restaurants and businesses closing up the last couple years including several we have tried and liked. A couple other long time favorites have changed owners and names. The list includes: Newell House - only went there once for breakfast Hook, Line and Sinker - really like the place, good fish Backwater Pub - we had a really good time the one time we stopped in Mac and Dog - good burgers but not a great location inside Key West Blue Fish - excellent cajun but closed before we could go back Rise Above It - nice little place Galatis's - good pizza Bucketheads - closed shortly after we were there, would have like to go back Name changes: Gabby's became Gabby's on Main but it's really a new place Broadway Grille became Broadway Bayou and kept the same menu Support local! As I mentioned last year, October is my favorite beer month because everyone's Octoberfest is out. Last years post is available by clicking this sentence.
Top tier: Sam Adams - easy to get and really good on draft. Leinenkugel - another easy to get and it's close to Sam Adams First two are bottles but these two are cans Founders - a surprising find from last year Alesmith - first year having it but it's right up there Flying Dog - real good but more expensive (bottle) Next tier - good but not as good as the top tier Tighthead - would be top tier but comes in a 4 pack of 16oz Civil Life - just misses out on top tier Brooklyn - a touch behind Civil Life Odells - same as Brooklyn Just misses out on top two tiers: Revolution - good and just misses out on the next tier up Bells - good at first then goes a little downhill Shiner - first one I saw this year Schlafly - Haven't tried this year LeftHand - really had to get a handle on this one. Sierra Nevada - a little hoppy but not bad, haven't tried this year Middle of the road tier 4204 - ok but nowhere close to top tiers Old Nation - barely in the middle tier and it comes in a 4 pack of 16oz cans Sierra Nevada - a little hoppy but not bad Great Lakes - has a different aftertaste, just ahead of the bottom tier Bottom tier Paulander - good but only comes in 11.2 oz bottles Spaten - ok but nothing stands out Hschorr- Pschorr - like Spaten nothing really stands out Least favorites Capitol - surprising close to Von Jakob Von Jakob - couldn't drink a whole glass Hofbrau - light taste and only comes in 11.2 oz bottles |
