Lisa had fixed some of her famous chicken salad sliders yesterday for my weekly pitch game but after a visit from Andrew and Ethan we decided to order from the new Dominos.
We got an ultimate pepperoni with a side of parmesan bites. It's a nice touch that you can watch the progress on the app or website. The order arrived in good time and was nice and hot. Downside was the crust was kind of soggy and I didn't care for the cheese blend they use. The pepperoni was really good but not enough to save the overall experience. I really liked the parmesan bites. Not the best first impression but we'll try it again.

I finally felt well enough to get and do something yesterday so we decided to go to Brunzeez's even though they don't have beer. The main reason we went there was to try out the mushrooms so we started off we an order of them and also an order of fries for Mike.
I had decided on catfish on the way up but when I ordered it they were out. I didn't really want bluegill and I didn't have a backup plan. I was a little discombobulated and rushing to decide. I should have stuck with a senior meal with a chicken breast and a side but it might have taken awhile so I ordered fried shrimp with a salad and corn. After the waitress left I noticed a sign stuck in a window for a harvest salad and would have gotten that if I saw it in time. I also noticed wings on a chalkboard and would have got those. Oh well The mushrooms were outstanding and the fries were solid. My side salad was really good and plenty big but the croutons were kind of blah. My shrimp was nothing special at all and the corn was typical out of a can corn. Everyone else got a half salad which was plenty big enough and they seemed pleased with them. The mushrooms saved the day but otherwise kind of ho hum type of place. Afterwards the girls and Mike went to a boutique while I went to Gabbys for a quick beer. I thought they'd be gone a while but I'd barely drank when they showed up and had a drink. We headed down to Big Muddy since they had Red Devil Red again but once again they ran out while we were there. Second time in a row. By this time all the fried food wasn't sitting well and I'd run out of gas so we headed home. I've been sick the last couple days and haven't felt like writing anything.
Last Sunday was Mikes birthday and so on Saturday he picked Frenchman's Widow. Me and Lisa split a french dip with a side of gumbo. We also got fried mushrooms and cheese curds for everyone. The mushrooms were decent but the button type mushrooms are always very greasy when you bite in to them. The cheese curds were disappointing, they tasted like regular cheese instead of curds. I thought both the french dip and gumbo was good but Lisa and Debbie said the french dip was stringy and fatty. Short post today because I woke up sick Sunday morning and I'm still not back to 100%. I'll spare you the gory details. Tuesday we had our annual bocce meeting. We were getting our granddaughter so thought we'd have to leave early but were able to stay until the end. The meeting was better attended than usual and best of all there were 9-10 spots running for the board. Electing the new board is the main function of the meeting. Two board members were not returning but all the others were running for reelection.
I really like the makeup of the new board, enough carry over to ensure the club maintains it's current success and some new young board members to bring new ideas and a freshness to the board. Congratulations to the new members and thanks to the previous members. I wanted the 49ers to win the Super Bowl mainly because I don't want the Chiefs to get the chance to win three in a row. No team has won three Super Bowls in a row however my beloved Green Bay Packers have won three NFL championships in a row and they've done it twice. The Super Bowl wasn't started until after the 1966 season. The Packers won the NFL championship in 1965 then the first two Super Bowls.
Anyway the Super Bowl has become too much hype and entertainment and not enough about the game. I'm not a fan of all the halftime shows. NFL halftimes are normally 12 minutes and I say keep it at that. Super Bowl halftimes run close to 30 minutes. Halftime is a time to go pee then grab a drink and some snacks then back to football,. I also could care less about the commercials. Another time to peek and get drinks and snacks. Make the focus about football again. Yesterday was a very busy day. It started off with the twins having a doubleheader but we had to abort because of one who was in a "mood". We did get to see Greyson get a basket before we left. Next up with when to the Pit to watch our great niece play volleyball. Both of us were very impressed with her play.
Next we went to Big Muddy to grab a couple Red Devil Red. Even a confirmed friend who is a stag drinker liked it. We got lucky and got the last two and a half glasses of it before they ran out. Please Chuck make more. As always the next choice was left to the driver. I'd been wanting to try out Salty Boar for a while so off we went to DuQuoin. There's nothing fancy about the inside but nice enough for me. We started off with spicy cheese curds and pork skins for appetizers. I was torn between a couple things but when Lisa ordered pulled pork I decided on fried chicken sandwich. When everything got there Lisa's pulled pork looked dry and upon tasting it was dry and not that great. The BBQ sauce was stellar either. My sandwich didn't have anything on it other than the fried chicken patty. I got mayo and pickles to put on and later added garlic parm to it. Even after all that it was that dull tasting and not that good. Lisa sides were a bacon salad and potato salad. Neither stood out to me but my fries were the best thing out of all of it. Debbie had ordered a wrap and it looked good. I should add that the pork rinds were good but I wasn't wild about the cheese curds, tasted more like cheese than curds. I know that sounds weird but there is a difference. Next we stopped at St Nicks for a quick drink since Mike and Debbie hadn't been there. They'd run out of their Octoberfest beer a couple weeks prior 😞. Once again I was hijacked and had to stop at the Da-Nite for "pickle shots", "pickle shots" "pickle shots", you get the picture. Finally some good beer news, they had Alaskan Amber on draft, one of my favorites. We stayed a little longer than we should have but still were home early. We've had better "adventures" but overall was still an enjoyable day. We made a quick trip to Sam's yesterday primarily to get wings for the Super Bowl. We had time constraints so we decided to stop at Sergio's in carbondale. I've been wanting to give it a try for quite some time but for whatever reasons it hasn't happened until yesterday.
We both ordered beers and while they have drafts they don't have any Mexican beer on tap, quite a disappointment. Our waiter was very friendly and easy going. I ended up ordering seafood del mar while Lisa ordered cameron del diablo, these names might not be quite right but I don't feel finding their menu to verify. The names should be close enough though. We'd both had these at the old one in Murphysboro before it burned down. The food got there in a reasonable time and looked great. Mine came with shrimp, scallops and clams with broccoli and cauliflower mixed in as the main dish along with fried rice and a "salad". The salad is some lettuce with peppers and peppers, really a better topping than a "salad". The rice was solid. The seafood del mar was great. I wasn't a big fan of the clams but they weren't terrible either and there was plenty to bring home for a light supper. Lisa liked hers too but said it was on the verge of being too hot for her which means way to hot for me anymore. Overall we both thought this was a really good decision. I woke up not feeling 100% but the twins had an alleged basketball game so I put on my big boy pants and went to watch them play. Both teams had around 13 players each, way too many. To say the rules were loosely enforced would be an overstatement. No dribbling, no fouls and only a little out of bounds. I hope they get a little tighter in future games.
Next I had to stop by the old high school to meet a lady who had a charm like football with my uncles name on it from 1927. We took a short tour through the old high school and then headed home. Big Muddy had Red Devil Red so we went out there for a couple. Red Devil Red is probably my favorite local beer. Remarkably Mike didn't buy a single shirt or hoodie. Next we headed down to Bottoms Up to grab a bite to eat. I was undecided between half a chicken or wings and ended up getting wings. Lisa had gotten wings too with hot sauce on the side so I ordered parmesan garlic but forgot on the side, big mistake. The wings were much better without anything on them. I also got slaw but it didn't have enough dressing on it. One of the few mediocre meals I've had there. Everyone else's was good though. On the way back I was serenaded by "pickle shots" repeatedly so we ended up going to the Da-Nite. I just got a beer and Mike his usual rum and diet but the girls started doing dirty pickle shots. After they had a few of those it was time to go home. We used to play cards all the time and the game of choice was always pitch. Always four point rarely five. We haven't played in years but yesterday long time friends Buck, Ted and Mike came over to the house and played for about three hours. Lisa had fixed some snacks even though I hadn't planned on having anything. She did a great job and they were much appreciated. She even sat in for a couple games after Buck had to leave.
Only downside was I drank too much beer but that's not a first for me. The whole thing exceeded my expectations and I'm ready for the next time. I'm hoping for a weekly get together probably on Mondays. It's been a dead time so I haven't posted much but I did have a post on IV's that Weebly ate and I didn't feel like rewriting it. |
