After golf yesterday the Glue wanted to go somewhere to sit and have a beer so we went to Route 51 Brewery so we could also get something to eat.
When we went in to the beer garden we were a little confused since there was no employee outside. A customer told us to go inside and place our order. It was strange inside with all the tables removed. Outside the tables were spaced out nicely with only a few being used but it was mid afternoon. We both got a light amber ale which was decent but not as good as some others I've had there. I've been having a fish hankering so I went with the cod with slaw and beans. The fish was good but really didn't satisfy my fish craving, the slaw and beans were both good but nothing special. The Glue has been wanting chicharrones so she went with that and wings. I tried a wing and it was good but came off all in one bite. The chicharrones were good. It was great to get out and be able to sit and enjoy a meal.

I'm trying to make up for lost time golfing so the last four days I played which pretty much beat me up. After playing well on Saturday I regressed on Sunday which bummed me out some but it was a great day.
We've been taking turns bringing beer, snacks and chairs to the course so we can enjoy a little 19th hole fun after the match. As we were finishing up I heard some thunder so I was afraid I'd have to rush home and mow the grass before it rained which I wasn't looking forward to. When I pulled in the driveway lo and behold the Glue had already mowed it. Sometimes it's the little things in life that go a long way. Thanks Glue. On Wednesday we took a much needed trip to Cape so we could actually sit down in a restaurant and have people wait on us. After considering several different places we decided to try Mary Jane's Bourbon & Smokehouse. Old friends and volleyball teammates Tony and Debbie met us there. We don't see them very often, especially Tony, so it was great they showed up.
We got there first and there were only two tables available since half the tables couldn't be used. We chose the one by the window which is also in the bed of an old pickup. The pickup idea is really cool but it made it hard for my old body to get into and out of. We were disappointed that they didn't have draft beer but I tried the Brooklyn Brown Ale and once the Glue tried it she had it too. Really smooth and tasty beer. I ended up ordering a rueben while the Glue went with cowboy chili. I was skeptical on the pretzel bun that the rueben came on but it was good as was the sandwich as a whole. I ordered brussel sprouts as my side and they were awesome, probably the best I've had. The Glue liked her chili but said it tasted more like gumbo. Tony had to leave so he could powerwash their pool area in the rain but Debbie joined us as we went to Katy O'ferrells which is almost a must stop for us when we're in Cape. Their house irish red is really good and we both also had a pint of Harp. Debbie left us for our next stop at Broussards to get some etouffee to bring home. We each had a beer at the bar while we waited and then headed home to enjoy the etouffee. To top off a good couple days I played nine holes yesterday and didn't have any back flare ups until the last hole. I played much better than I thought I would since I couldn't turn loose on the swing. It was great being out there but wish they'd ease the restrictions. On Thursday we went to Wenneman's Meat Market in St. Libory. We'd never been there but several people told us about how nice it is plus it was a nice day for a drive and the Glue wanted to get out of the house.
We were both very impressed by the place and the quality of meat. We primarily went to pick up some ribeyes for Sunday but we ended up with several other things and spent way too much money. Of course part of the too much money was because they had six packs of Alaskan Amber which I can't find around here. After we got home neither of us wanted to fix anything so we ordered a italian calazone and a italian salad from Martels. I'd only had one other calazone and it was several years ago. Both were very good and it's a combination we'll probably get more often. Like we promised the owner we made the return trip to Rose's Bourbon Bar yesterday to try the etouffee. We ordered two etouffees and an appetizer of bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers. The etouffee was on point and by far our favorite so far at Rose's but that's to be expected since we generally like etouffee better than any of things we've tried. It'll be nice to have a place that's relatively close that we can get cajun even if it's only served on Thursday through Monday. The jalapeno poppers were good and weren't so hot that I couldn't eat them but that's more the Glue's thing than mine. I'm starting to get better from most recent back problem so last Friday we decided to get out of the house and take a ride. Our ride took us down through the scatters and LaRue-Pine Hills. The last several times we've tried to go up to Inspiration Point the road has been under repair but this time it was open. It's been a long long time since I've been up there and the Glue doesn't remember ever being up there but I think we did it when our daughter was in middle school. Anyway it was a great drive on a beautiful day.
We ordered pick up from Bottom's Up. I went with fish and the Glue went with fried chicken. We both ordered chips and slaw as sides. They said it was be about a half hour so we took a short trip down through the bottoms area. Once we picked up our food and got it home the fish and chips didn't travel very well and seemed kind of soggy and not that great however the Glue's chicken was real good. During our road trip the Glue mentioned that Rose's Bourbon Rail had good and the next day I found out they had cajun which got both of us wanting to go since it's hard to find cajun around here. We couldn't get down there until yesterday (Monday) and that's their crawdad day. Neither of us are big crawdad fans but luckily they also had gumbo so we ordered a large gumbo, a small red beans and rice and boudin balls. On the way down we took a quick detour to check out the spillway and timed it almost perfect getting to Rose's. I walked up and the owner said it would be a couple more minutes and by the time I was paying for it the cook came out with our order. Neither of us had ever tried boudin balls which seemed similar to hush puppies. I liked these better than hush puppies but it's not something I'll get again soon. We were both surprised with the red beans and rice when we opened the container and weren't even sure what it was until I stirred it. Most places make their red beans and rice real thick and neither of us are big fans of them that way. This was thin and juicy and when put on the rice it was real good. The Glue was a big fan of the juice. The star of the meal was the gumbo. We both really liked it and for $10 you get 12 ounces of rice and 20 ounces of gumbo which is enough for both of us. We can't wait to go back and try the etouffee and hope they continue doing the cajun for the long haul. |
