The Glue hit it out of the park on Thanksgiving. With the exception of the turkey breast being a little dry everything was awesome. I didn't have any deviled eggs but she always does great with them. The dressing was probably the best she'd ever done and so were the sweet potatoes. Until recently I didn't really like pumpkin pie but I'm now a fan and The Glue's were great. With everything going on we only had Bailey and her family so we cut our several items from our normal menu and still had plenty of leftovers. Even the twin terrors were relatively well behaved. Otis on the other hand got in big trouble when he managed to sneak some turkey from the table while we were eating in the living room.

Yesterday we decided to go to The Mill in Sesser since they have a good selection of draft beer and are open for inside dining. We were the only customers there but they do a nice job of spacing our their tables and the waitress was masked anytime she came to our table. I ordered beer battered catfish with slaw and a side salad. The Glue got spicy wings and fried cauliflower. My catfish was real good but very heavy, think Long John Silvers but much better. The side salad was good size so we were able to share it and the slaw was real good even though it was creamy. I tried the Glue's cauliflower and thought they were good. She liked the wings but the dipping sauces weren't that appealing to either of us. Next time we really need to try their sandwiches.
After we left we went to Pheasant Hollow to see if they were open inside and they were so we stayed. They had Drunken Piper in stock again so I got one of those and the Glue got a double slushy. The bartender said I could fill up a growler to go of the Drunken Piper. Amazon had sent me the wrong size and color of growler but I traded with for a 32oz.. I picked up a bottle of Sauced Up Smokers BBQ sauce to bring home which I really like. Prairie Hogs BBQ had their food trailer there and a lady walked in with their shirt on. I'd never heard of them and asked where they were from, Woodlawn/Oakville. I mentioned I was buying a competitors sauce and she brought in samples of their two sauces, pulled pork and brisket chili. The Glue liked their Prairie Hot so we got a bottle of that too. We don't normally have a beer and pick up shrimp at Fatt Edds but yesterday we decided to eat there also. First we took a quick detour into Paducah to pick up some Yuengling and Kentucky Irish Red at Roof Brothers. I also picked up some Leinenkugel Toasted Bock that I'd never seen before.
On the way back I mentioned there was a bar on the way into Metropolis so we stopped in Super City Bar and Grill for a quick beer. They only had mainstream beers on tap but they did have Sam Adams Boston Lager in a bottle. Really nice looking interior. The barmaid gave us a little history of the place and was very nice. She said pizza is what they are known for and the one that was brought out looked good. As we into Metropolis there was a beer sign at a place called Sullys Billard Bar & Grill and it is a more of a pool hall than bar or grill. We both got a Sam Adams Christmas which was pretty decent. I think there were 13 pool tables in the place but it's not really our kind of place. We got to Fat Edds and ordered a couple tall Blue Moons while we decided what to get. We got 24 peel and eat shrimp to take home. We also ordered 12 wings in Edds sauce, a steak kabob, fish tacos and a cup of chili for the Glue. They gave me the shrimp when I ordered so I took it out to the Jeep to put in a thermal bag. It didn't take long before our number was called and imagine my surprise when there were 24 more shrimp with the order. The Glue like the chili enough to get a bowl to go. The wings were good but everything else was better. The steak kabobs were real good and the fish tacos were great, They were made with cod which isn't my favorite fish but it worked. On the way home the Glue wanted to stop at Old Route 51 BBQ and try their chili which they said is a Tex-Mex style chili. The Glue sampled it and said it was good but wasn't chili. I tried it and thought it was awesome and I'm not a overly big chili fan. Of course when we got home we had to have some of the shrimp which is a long time favorite, A couple days ago we made a quick trip around Giant City to take advantage of some great weather. Afterwards we picked up New Kahala to take home. The last couple times the food had been kind of blah but this time it was spectacular. I got schezwan beef and opted for extra sauce and a spice level of one. It was some of the best chinese/asian food I've had in a long long time.
The Glue got her go to twice cooked chicken with extra sauce and kicked the spice level up a few notches. She said hers was great too and the little I tried was really good but I was afraid to try to much with the spice level. The extra sauce is a game changer and is a must each time we go there. The food was so good we were ready to go back the next day. Yesterday we made a quick trip down to Cape to get some cajun at Broussards. We got our normally combo platter with crawfish ettouffe and gumbo. They let us swap out the red beans and rice for a second salad. We both ordered a Sam Adams Octoberfest.
What can I saw, you don't go wrong with cajun at Broussards, it was great. Afterwards we walked up the hill to Katy O'ferrells for a beer. On the way up there was an obviously messed up woman walking up the hill too. Luckily she was on the other side of the street. She was F this and F that. Parked in front of Minglewood was a really cool looking car and the woman kept going on and on about it being an Excalibur and how she would own one when she grew up. Fortunately she stopped in a park halfway up and we didn't have to hear her the whole way. For one of the few times there was nothing really happening at Katy O'ferrells so we drank our beer and headed home. On the way we decided to take advantage of the great weather and head up into LaRue-Pine Hills. Happy birthday Bailey October is my favorite beer month, most breweries roll out their marzen beer commonly called Octoberfest. Both of us are big fans of Octoberfest style of beer.
My top three: Sam Adams - it's great on draft Leinenkugel - a little different than Sam Adams but very good Founders - first time trying it this year and didn't expect much but it's very good Rounding out the top five: Excel - my favorite of the "local" breweries Sierra Nevada - a little more hop flavor. I didn't think I'd like it but did Next up: Shiner - it's good but I like the others better Schlafly - ditto Shiner Ok but not as good: 4204 - I need to revisit Towards the bottom: Paulander - it pretty good but only a 11.2 ounce bottle Spaten - ok but nothing really stood out Hacker-Pschorr - like Spaten nothing really stood out Least favorite: Hofbrau - lighter color and taste plus only a 11.2 ounce bottle Haven't had in a while and need to revisit: New Glarus - Staghorn but I seem to remember being disappointed Yuengling - same as Staghorn I seem to remember being disappointed I also sampled Route 51 and the Hop Octoberfest beers and both were good but need to get a full glass to really know if I like it. |
