For the second time in three days we visited a long time favorite that has changed names and owners. We were going to go try out Salty Boar in Du Quoin but they didn't serve their etouffee special until 4:30 so we opted for Broadway Bayou in Sparta. It used to be Broadway Grille and unlike Gabbys on Main it has kept the same menu. Our waitress who we seem to get every time we got there said a bartender bought the place so everyone could keep their jobs.
We normally get crawfish etouffee but this time opted for alligator etouffee since we weren't getting fried alligator. We also got breaded chicken wings that they made like their fried chicken. The chicken wings were real good and the honey garlic sauce on side was a good idea. The etouffee was also real good but the alligator was very very tough. Tough enough that we said something and the waitress went and got crawfish for us to put in which really helped. Edit 10/27: 🍺🍺🍺🍷

Yesterday we went to Gabbys on Main for the first time. Gabbys had long been a favorite of ours due to good food and lots of options. The new owners has done a lot to upgrade the inside appearance but has really cut down the number of food choices and raised the prices.
I finally decided on a burger with swiss, mushrooms, purple onion and pickles. I debated on chips but stuck with seasoned fries. The Glue ordered bone in wings, hot of course. She also got a small Gabbys salad. There were only a cook and a waitress working but the food arrived in a timely manner. My burger was a nice sized burger but just okay. It was overdone for my taste and I should have ordered it cooked medium. The purple onion was a white onion and the pickle was spear instead of pickle chips on the burger itself. The fries were very good but I didn't taste a lot of seasoning on them. I liked the Glues wings better than she did, they weren't hot enough for her but were good for me. The best thing was the Glues salad. The half portion was still pretty big and it had a nice blend of items in it. The house vinaigrette was very good. 🍺🍺🍷 We stopped at the Vault for breakfast on Friday prior to my eye appointment in Harrisburg. We got there plenty early and it was a good thing because there was a twenty minute wait.
Once we were seated service was fast and the food arrived in a timely manner. I ordered bacon, two over medium eggs, hash browns and biscuits. The Glue ordered bacon, over easy eggs and biscuits. We both ordered a side of gravy for the biscuits. There were four strips of bacon that were cooked very well. The hash browns and biscuits and gravy were very good. My only complaints is the eggs were more towards over easy but that's not a big deal for me. My other complaint is the waitress was a Dolphins fan and the owner is a Steeler fan, yuck. 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍷 After finishing first in the league we were the number one seed in the interpool tournament resulting in a first round bye. In our first game we played Boccezilla who had out lasted Muddy Rollers in the first round.
We started off scoring five straight points and things were looking good. Not wanting to keep a good thing going we gave up back to back three point frames and were on the wrong side of a 6-5 score. We tied it up 6-6 before yielding another three point frame and a 9-6 defeat. The Silkworm court was fast on one side but real slow on another and it was hard for me to adjust but it shouldn't have been. Thus ends league play for the year. On to the tournament. Or not. Herbster just texted me and him and Clutch are on their way to Michigan to see their newly arrived granddaughter. Say hello to the newest Roll'em member Charlotte Grace. After watching my great nephew play football on Saturday morning I was in the mood for a ribeye. Not really unusual for me but we haven't had one for quite awhile. Most of our goto places don't open until 4 so we decided to go to Logan's. On the way over I thought about 20's Hideout but they didn't open until 2 so we stopped in at 618 Taphouse for a beer. We both ordered Avalanche Amber and really enjoyed it while sitting on the patio.
While we were there I checked the price of the Hideout and it was really expensive so we were back on for Logans. We got a 16oz ribeye with a salad and chips to split between us. I had them put cajun seasoning on the ribeye. They brought out some rolls and they are always good. The waitress knew we were spitting it so she brought us an extra bowl for the salad. The salad was good but it was a lot smaller than it used to be. The ribeye was surprisingly very very good. Tender and a lot of flavor. The chips were another matter. Plain with not a lot of flavor. Salt helped but needed something else. 🍺🍺🍺🍺 mostly because of the steak, would be even higher if not of the chips. We entered week 8 with a one game lead over three teams for 1st place. Clutch had to work late again so once again new supersub Danny filled in for her.
In the first game we played Bocce-licious on the first court. We started off with the game by getting one point and then it was back and forth until it was 3-3. We got a couple more points to get to 5-3 when the Glue got her first ball close to the pallino and Bocce-licious used all for balls to try and get her out. This left us with at least six feet or so between their closest ball and the pallino. We have a tendency to mess up in these situations and not get all the points we should. This time we took advantage and walked away with a 9-3 win. In the second game we played long time rival Muddy Rollers who were playing without Jay and Melba. We got off to a good start and a 5-0 lead before they scored a couple. We answered and closed out the game 9-2 giving us the league championship for the first time in a long time. Herbster and the Glue lead the way and got a lot of first balls close to the pallino causing the other teams to use several or all of their shots to beat them. We finished the season 13-3 which is tied our second best record ever. Part 2 of our anniversary trip.
After we left Who Dat's and Washy's we headed down to Waterloo to checkout Hopskeller. When we got there the street in from of the Subburn German was closed down and I figured it was an Octoberfest party going on. We kept to the plan and went to Hopskeller. Really nice place and there were a lot of people there. We got a couple of the last seats at the bar and after trying a few of the beers I ordered an Illinois Common Ale while I think the Glue got a Market Cross London Lager. Both were really good and the people at the bar were real friendly. One couple went to SIU while another guy is originally from Caterville. Nice place with good beer that we will go back to. We left there to see what was going on at Stubborn German which turned out to be Subbornfest. An absolutely great atmosphere. The bar was close to being full and so was their outside area. There were also tables set up in the street that were mostly full. There were a lot of men in Lederhosen and women in Dirndl. Many others had alpine type hats and almost everyone had a beer in their hand. Keep in mind this was midafternoon on a Friday. The Waterloo German Band was playing on a stage and everyone seemed to be having a good time. We got lucky and found a seat at the bars outside rail and I ordered a couple Octoberfest beers. The beer was good but we got the Schitzengiggles for our second beer. The guy sitting next to us came up from Campbell Hill for the event and does every year. Even though we were having a great time once we finished the second beer it was time to head home and thus ended one of our better anniversaries. Yesterday was our wedding anniversary so we decided to go on a day trip to Columbia Il. to check out Who Dat's Southern Food. We've been wanting to go there for several years but I was worried about traffic. Friends Paducah and Tonya have urged us to go for quite a while too.
We took a round about way to get there and it took a little longer to get there but we weren't in a hurry. Once we hit route 3 just outside Columbia it was easy to get to the place. When we got there I mentioned we knew the "girls from Murphysboro" and you would have thought they were rock stars. The place isn't real big and has a nice cozy feel to it. They didn't have draft beer but they did have Abita Amber so we ordered those while we decided on what we were going to have. We ended up ordering etouffee, gumbo and hot bbq shrimp. While we waited we got to talk to the owner, waitress and a couple of the patrons there. They all knew the girls from Murphysboro and the owner comes down occasionally to visit them. Both of us thought the etouffee was outstanding. I thought the gumbo was good but the Glue wasn't overly fond of it. The Glue really liked the bbq shrimp, I thought they were good but very messy. We were done and the owner brought over a small piece of gooey butter cake for us to sample. The Glue isn't as big on sweets as I am but she said that I'd better try it before she ate it all. She also ordered a piece to take home to our daughter. 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺 In the first game we played Usual Suspects and we jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead. They got a point but we kept up the pressure and won 9-3.
The second game was a big game against Boccelism who we had lost to earlier in the season. They had played their first game on the third court while we were back on the middle court. Clutch and the Glue got us off to a great start by getting three points. After me and Herbster gave up a point Clutch and Glue got us a couple more. From there we kept a good lead on them and won 9-4. |
