On Thursday we went over to Sam's after I'd played golf and when we were done we couldn't decide where to go for lunch so we went to 618 Taphouse for a beer. Where we sat out was right by a ac duct and the Glue was freezing so we went outside to their patio. What a great place to have a beer so we had another.
We ended up going to Underground Public House partly because we had a %15 off card. After much deliberation I decided on the churrasco completo with no avocado and I took off the tomato. It's a grilled skirt steak sandwich with a bunch of fancy stuff on it but it was very good. The Glue went with the banh mi which is a fried shrimp sandwich with fancy stuff on it. It was not near as good as what I had. The Glue also wanted chicharrones which ended up being the star of the lunch. I don't eat them much anymore but these were the best around here that I've had. What really made them was the seasoning which had just enough kick without going over the top. Yesterday we went to Cobden to Downtown Abbey for pizza. We decided to split a large salad and get a small meat-zza pizza but sub out the ground beef for mushrooms. The salad was ok but the pizza was really good. Their pizza has probably passed up Quatros as my favorite around, in part to having had Quatros so many times. We'd notice there was a place across the street that said coming soon Old Route 51 BBQ so we asked our waitress Alley (who was also our daughters classmate) if she knew anything about it. She said it was real good especially the brisket which got or attention in a hurry. She said you could probably get some if he had any done which I misunderstood to mean buy some so we went there after we finished. The guy said he wasn't selling any but that we could sample some burnt ends. As we were walking to his pit we got to talking BBQ and that Alley had sent us. In addition to the burnt ends he ended up letting us try his ribs and bologna. All of it was good but the burnt ends stood out, really really good. We got to look at his very impressive BBQ rig and hear what he has planned. Very nice guy and we'll be back soon after he opens.

With the Glue returning from her California trip Roll'em If Ya Got'em took to the courts for the first time this season with it's official line up.
In the first game we played the other undefeated team Too Old To Bowl and ex super sub Fred. Roll'em got off to a quick start thanks to a pair of two point frames and a 4-0 lead. Thanks to some very good first balls Too Old to Bowl followed with a pair of single point frames and then a two point frame to tie the score at 4-4. They then ran off five more single point frames to beat us 9-4 with most of these points being the result of their last throw either edging us out or mostly hitting our point ball just enough for them to get a point. In the second game we took on Boccezilla. In they first game the Glue threw with Pete while I threw with Roberto. I decided the we needed to keep the chemistry of Roberto and Pete together so we went with them on one end and me and the Glue on the other. They got the first point but we answered and kept the pressure on taking a 9-5 win in a game that was uncomfortably close. On the night none of us threw real well and were kind of lucky to get out of the night with a split. Speaking of the Glue's trip getting her to Lambert Airport at 5am and then picking her up at midnight are not trips I particularly liked especially when her return flight was 45 minutes late. With the Glue still in California we once again turned to the Herbster to sub which still feels weird to say.
In the first game we took on Muddy Rollers on the Kiwanis court. Roll'em got off to a fast start and kept increasing their lead until it got to 8-2. At this point Muddy Rollers got hot and we had started cutting into our lead. It kept getting closer and closer until it reached 8-6. On their last ball of the next frame they put it close to the pallino and Pete decided to knock. He was successful but the pallino bounced off the back wall to a few inches from their ball. To make matters worse they had two other balls that were points too and we were down to our last ball. To keep from blowing a 8-2 lead Pete had to get his last ball inside their two balls and go to the next frame. His throw was good and it got inside the their two balls but then it made contact with their close ball and moved it just enough that we got the point and the win 9-6. In the second game we took on Can't Be Trusted on the Silkworm court where they'd been for their first game. They started out strong moving to a 3-0 lead before we got a three point frame from Pete and Roberto to tie the game. We moved out front 7-5 including my one and only good throw on the night. At this point we had a ball close and Pete decided to get our ball out of the way and while he made a good throw the pallino ended up in a position where it was closer to two of our balls. Their last throw was wide and we won 9-5. As a Boston Bruin fan the Stanley Cup didn't end the way I would have liked but for the most part it was exciting. I thought the Blues were the better team for most of the series. Both goaltenders were spectacular and I thought Binington should have been chosen as the Conn Smyth (MVP) award. The city of St. Louis has waited a long time for this and so far I haven't heard of any of the stupidity that happens in other cities such as Detroit and Chicago.
Congratulations to the Blues, their fans and the city of St. Louis on raising the Stanley Cup. With the Glue visiting her family in California Roll'em turned to the Herbster to sub for her, something wrong with saying Herbster to sub.
In the first game we took on Corner Bocce Ballers on the Key Club court. Herbster and I started the game off by getting two points. Roberto and Pete followed up with four points to put us up 6-0. Herbster went deep with the pallino and we managed to get three inside of their closest ball for a 9-0 win in three frames. The second game we took on Boobs and BJ on the Silkworm court. After trading a couple points we moved to a 5-2 lead with Roberto and Pete getting all but one of the points. Then they got hot, scoring the next four points to jump to a 6-5 lead. They kept hot getting a throw less than a foot away from the pallino. With them having two balls left and us down to our last ball we managed to move the pallino and our ball stopped a little closer than theirs. Their last two throws were not close and we'd tied the score 6-6. Roberto put the pallino close to the wall but his first shot was well short of the pallino. Their next two shots were off the mark and on their last ball they hit their closest ball and opened it up a bunch. Pete took advantage and we got a 9-6 win. While we were between games something happened that I don't think I've seen before. All three games being played ended at the same time. Sadly after rushing home my attempt to rally my Bruins fell short and the Blues won the Stanley Cup. On Wednesday Roll'em kicked off the Summer 2019 season. With Herbster and Clutch taking the summer off we once again turned to Roberto to play with us. We also got newcomer Pete to join us. When Roberto couldn't make the first week we turned to old reliable Ted to play.
In the first game we took on Usual suspects on the middle court. We struck first with a couple points but they came back with one. The game stayed close for a while before we pulled away at the end winning 9-5 in game that seemed closer mainly due to mine and Ted's inability to put up quality shots. In the second game we took on Boccelism on the first court. Ted started throwing better but I still wasn't throwing very well. The game once again started out close but we again pulled away winning by a 9-4 score. Boccelism had troubles after playing their first game on the new court. On Monday Boro City Rollers beat Mag 4 and PBR to begin the summer season. This past Friday I decided to go to the block party at Brews Brothers to hear Downstate Music Co.. The Glue was out of town because the grandtwins were in a wedding and she was helping out. The weather was perfect especially when the sun went down.
I sat by part time Roll'em sub Ted and his wife Marsha but there were a lot of people there including 4 or 5 classmates of mine. Since we were outside I stuck with Ultra because they were easier to keep cold than any of the draft beer in plastic cups. The band played a lot of great old songs and even worked in a Jimmy Buffett song but it was Fins which isn't one of my favorites. They have a very big sound with two trumpet types, a sax, a trombone, drums, keyboards, rhythm guitar, bass guitar and harmonica players some of whom play multiple instruments. Kilby's was there serving BBQ sandwiches which I decided to take home once I got ready to go home. Since they stopped serving at 10pm I went there about 15 minutes before they closed and ordered a BBQ, slaw and beans. Ronnie always takes care of me but he went over the line this time sending two full orders home with me. The BBQ is always great and the slaw was good but the beans were just ok. So ended up big Friday night on the town with the Glue out of town. |
