Yesterday we made a quick trip down to Paducah to Strickland Seafood. It seems like a strange place to have a restaurant, in the middle of a residential neighborhood. The place was almost full when we got there around 12:30. They had a nice selection of draft beers including Yuengling which you can't find around here so I ordered a large Yuengling while the Glue went with a large Blue Moon. They weren't kidding about large, I'm guessing 32 ounce mug.
We decided to split a gumbo and their crawfish jubilee with a side of red beans and rice. We also had a side salad which they gave us two plates so we could share. The red beans and rice were surprisingly good. The gumbo was different than what I expected but it was also good. The crawfish jubilee was very good and hard to explain. All around a good place and we'll go back sometime. Of course the real reason for going down there was to stop by Fat Edd's and pick up some shrimp and cocktail sauce. We had an Octoberfest from Sam Adams while we were waiting which wasn't very long. We were both full or we'd have ate some of the shrimp while we there but it was great later on at home.

Roll'em took the courts against the Original Banksters in the first game last night. Playing on the first game they took a 2-0 lead in the first two frames before we had an chance to get on the board but a chance was all it was. They had exhausted all their balls and we still had three left but our second ball hit the pallino into a pocket of their three balls and we were unable to do anything about it and they led 5-0. We gradually crawled back into the game and closed to 7-6. With the ball close the the side all the balls were clustered close on the wall with us having the closest. Their last ball pushed their closest ball a hair further away with us having two left to throw. Our first ball was close enough and our second ball was on the pallino so it came to a measurement for the third point. The little bit they moved their ball was the difference and we got three points and the win 9-6.
We went home since we had a two hour break and when we came back we played 2 Boobs and 2 Girls. Roll'em got the first three points and then 2 Boobs made a come back as the game went back and forth on the erratic Silkworm court. They finally went ahead 8-7. We had a chance to win the game when my first ball got in but my second one was off target. The next frame they got their second throw close enough that we couldn't beat it and they got a 9-8 win. Last Roll'em ran into a red hot Boccilism team. Cathy kept putting her first ball close the first few frames and Mike was hot all game and the other end made good enough throws to score too. The game started out with them taking an early lead before we could score. We got a second point but they scored a couple and took an 8-2 lead. We got a three point frame to move to 8-5 but they put a ball about two feet away and we couldn't get inside it and Boccilism got a 9-5 win.
In the second game we played Bertha's Ball Handlers on the Silkworm court. We threw a lot better and gradually pulled away helped along by a three point frame and a couple two point frames. We ended up with a 9-4 win on a long night of bocce. Sad news is that we told Herbster and Clutch that we were going to play with our Monday team for various reasons however Roll'em is still our primary team. Tuesday was the Glue's birthday so we decided to go to JT's on the Hill in Royalton. We'd been there a few years ago but have been wanting to go back. They have several beers on tap and both of us went with a Blue Moon. I went with the fish while the Glue went with shrimp scampi. They had all you can eat fish but I didn't think was a good idea plus it only came with fries and slaw and I didn't want fries. I did get the slaw though and it was good but not great. The salad was real good but they didn't have a house dressing so I went with french and the Glue went with ranch. The fish was good and the Glue said the scampi was just ok, nothing special.
In the first game we took on the Muddy Rollers. The game was over almost before it began as we cruised to a 9-1. The Glue finished it off with a great throw right on the pallino.
In the second game we took on the Usual Suspects. This was a totally different game as both teams traded points. They were on fire and throwing great but we somehow managed to keep it close and tie the game at 7-7. They got the next point and then in the next frame on their last ball they got a ball about four inches away from pallino. I had two shots but couldn't capitalize and they won 9-7. Yesterday we went to MOD pizza in Carbondale. It seemed like a pizza version of Subway and it was kind of confusing for first timers. The person behind the counter also seemed hurry us along even though no one else was in line. All the ingredients were on display at the counter and it's the same price no matter how many toppings you get on your pizza.
We got a little extra sauce on ours with pepperoni, salami and mushrooms. Since they only have 11" pizzas we also got a side of cheesy garlic bread. They have a very limited selection of beer but they do have two taps and we went with a pitcher of Blue Moon. The pizza and cheesy garlic bread arrived quickly and they asked if I wanted dip. I thought they meant for the bread but they started putting it on the pizza. I stopped them before too much was on it. Neither of us were very impressed with the pizza but the cheesy garlic bread was good. The overall concept is really cool but there's too many local options that are a lot better and we aren't in any hurry to go back. Yesterday we went to T Street Pub in Christopher to try out their pasta bar. We'd stopped in there before to have a beer when they were having it and it smelled delicious when we walked in the bar so we've been wanting to try it for a while. The pasta bar isn't your typical one where there are several pastas that are already cooked and you chose one. This one there is a cook who prepares your order when you place it.
They have several beers on draft which is always a plus for us. I went Shiner Bock and the Glue went with AmberBock. We both decided on the pasta bar and got the house dressing on our salads. There was two kinds of noodles you could choose from and both of us went with the fettuccine over the bow tie. There were several sauces to choose from including marinara, alfredo and a couple others. Both of us went with the marinara. Several meats and veggies were available to choose from for toppings. I went the steak and mushrooms and the Glue went with meatballs and mushrooms. I was surprised that the steak was the ends from the filets they trimmed. The salads and dressing were both very good and big enough we brought quite a bit home. The pasta bowls were a different story. They were way beyond big. We could have split a bowl and still had plenty of left overs. The pasta was great and having it prepared just for you is awesome. I don't think I ate half my bowl and once the Glue stirred hers it didn't look like she'd ate anything but we were both stuffed. In retrospect the half bowl would have been plenty but for four more dollars you get twice as much and plenty of leftovers for warming up. |
